Every other year I celebrate New Years Eve with my dad and his wife Lisa. To ring in the New Year this year we decided to go to the Red Wings hockey game. The night started off when my dad, Lisa, my sister Sam and I went to dinner at La Pita in Dearborn. After we ate dinner the four of us drove to Detroit for the game. Around seven we arrived at Joe Louis ready to watch the last hockey game of the year during disco night. The game went by fast as we danced to the 70’s music. Luckily for us the Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-2.
When the game ended my dad picked up my friend Emma and we headed to his house. Soon after we got there my sisters boyfriend Chris came over. For the next few hours the six of us watched a variety of artists sing to the crowd of people in Times Square. As we all put on our New Years hats and tiaras, we grabbed the noisemakers and Lisa poured the champagne and sparkling juice. As the time slowly counted down to midnight we yelled with the TV, “Happy New Year”. All of us ran outside and made as much noise as possible for the next four minutes. We made toasts saying goodbye to 2009 and welcome 2010. All of us suddenly got tired soon after midnight. Emma and I went to my room around one to watch more performances. We drifted to sleep and thought of what the New Year might bring.

Fourth Thursday in November
During the holiday season my family has many traditions. Every year since I was little, I remember my family coming in from Iowa to celebrate Thanksgiving. On the forth Wednesday in November my cousin Brittany spends the night at my house. We go to bed early because we wake up at five o’ clock the next day. It is a tradition for my dad to take my cousin, my sister Sam and I to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. When we arrive in Detroit, we go to the VFW hall and have the pancake breakfast. We stand in the same place every year in the bitter cold and watch the floats and balloons creep down Woodward. Right before Santa comes down the street, we start to walk down to Ford Field. The four of us watch the Detroit Lions game together every year because that’s the only time we spend with him on Thanksgiving.
After the game, my dad drives Brittany to my grandparents house and takes Sam and I to our house. We usually take a short nap and then start to get ready for dinner. Every year, dinner is at my house because it is the biggest. My mom makes the turkey and my grandma makes the traditional yams, cheesy potatoes and bread. After we eat dinner my family sits around my living room and talks. In my family, during Thanksgiving we usually only have about ten people over. Thanksgiving for my family is very simple. It’s a fun day to spend time with each other and give thanks for what we have.

The Power of One
The movie The Power of One was a very touching movie for me to see. It was hard for me to see all the people that P.K. loved die. It hurt me the most to see his love, Maria die in the fighting for education for the less fortunate. It was also hard for me to see Geel Piet die. I didn’t like seeing him being beat to death by Botha. Sergeant Botha was killed in the end by P.K. and I was happy to see him get his revenge. Botha killed most of the people P.K. such as Maria, the chicken, and Geel Piet. After all that happened to P.K. he still lived his life, made new friends, and helped people get an education around the laws. I was inspired by the way he lived his life with all the obstacles he had to go through.
I learned what life was like in South Africa while watching this movie. I saw the way the natives lived with the apartheid laws in the country. From the movie, I saw first hand how bad life was like for the people. The movie reminded me of the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence, Molly fought for her freedom and helped her sister do the same. She fought for rights as P.K. did for the people in his country. This movie made me see what one person could do to change and help other people. I was inspired by the actions P.K. did for others and it made me see the world in a different way.

I Give Thanks...
10. I am thankful for my friends. My friends always have my back and I’m glad we are so close. They are my secret keepers and I love having them in my life.
9. I am thankful for cheer. A lot of people think its not a sport, but cheer is my blood, sweat, and tears. Cheer has been my life since I was a little girl on freshman falcons and it’s my biggest passion.
8. I am thankful I have music in my life. It is my escape and my happy place everyday and it’s always there when I need it.
7. I am happy I have my dog Sugar. She is always there when I get home. My little Cockapoo is like my sister and the forth member of my family. I don’t know what I would do without her when I am bored.
6. I am so glad I have my best friend Emma. She has been my best friend since diapers. We use to fight almost everyday, but now we really don’t care. She is my sister that’s my age. Emma is over almost everyday. We are always together and I love it.
5. I am very thankful that everyday I have food and shelter. Everyday I have a place to sleep and food to eat. I can’t imagine my life not having food to eat or a place to sleep. I think some people don’t realize how precise the little things that we don’t think about are even though they are most important.
4. Today I am alive and free in the United States. I am in good health and I am very thankful for that. I live a good life and I am so glad I live my life he way I do.
3. I am very thankful to have my grandma with me today. She is a survivor and I can’t image not having her. Many times in her life she had to fight for her life and I would hate not being able to see her and spend time with her like I do now.
2. I am thankful for the rest of my family too. They always make me happy when I am sad. I love my family. They have been there for me since birth and I may do some stupid things, but I know that they only ground me because they care. Having a family that loves and cares is the best part in someone’s life and I think a lot of people take advantage of it.
1. I am mot thankful for my sister Sam. Without my sister I don’t know what my life would be like. Sam is my other half and I can’t live without her. She is always there for me and I know no matter what happens she will still be my sister. We may fight every once and a while, but she is my best friend and I wouldn’t want it any other way. She has been there for me since birth and from then on she has been my other mom looking out for me. I love her so much and I am thankful we are sisters.

American Culture
American culture is very unique and well developed. In the United States of America, we have more advanced technology and ways of living than other countries. Americans are very independent in their day to day lives. American technology has improved very fast, we get around almost everywhere by car or other vehicles and most Americans don’t celebrate all of the holidays we have. American technology is very advanced. Most children in America don’t go a day without listening to their iPod, watching T.V., or going on the computer to see what their friends are doing. Most Americans have one or more cars at their home. Almost everyone uses our many freeways and interstates to get from one place to another. It is very rare for people to walk or ride a bike. Americans all celebrate different things. In America, we have holidays that most people forget about such as Groundhog Day on February 2nd and Flag Day on June 14th. Americans usually just celebrate the normal holidays like Labor Day when most businesses close on the first Monday of September or Halloween on October 31st.
My culture is not very different from other people in the region I live in. I celebrate holidays, I learn about my history in school and I live with my family in our house. I celebrate almost all the national holidays in America today. I trick-o-treat on Halloween, I eat with my family on Thanksgiving, and I open presents with my family on Christmas. In school, we learn about how America got started and who developed it. In America, public school we have to stay in school until we are 16 and employed. I live, like most American families, in a house with my mom and sister. In some cases Americans live with another person of their immediate family, unlike people in other countries that live with many family members. My culture is American and I love the way I live in the United States.

High School! A Month in Review
SHS activities attended
During the Stevenson school year I have attended many activities through the school. The first thing I went to was the freshman dance. The night was full of dancing and talking with my friends. The next activity I went to was the Welcome Back Dance. It wasn’t as fun as the freshman dance, but I still had fun. Since school started I have been to every freshman and varsity football game, home and away. So far I have had a great time in my high school experience.
Hardest, easiest class
Out of all my classes, gymnastics is overall the easiest class. The whole hour we do a few routines and then we leave. It is the only class I have one hundred percent in. My hardest class is probably Spanish. I don’t like learning another language, but my class is a lot of fun.
Rumors and Gossip
In high school rumors about people get around very fast. If one little thing happens everyone gossips and twists the story to make people look bad. Gossip and rumors can ruin a person’s high school life, so don’t spread them if you hear them.
Faces in the news
Faces in the news the past weeks were President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and Ardi, remains of a person from Africa. There are new faces every week, and most of the time they are so hard to memorize. For some people its very easy because no one really looks alike is just names that are hard.
First cultural event
For my first cultural event I went with my sister and her friend Amanda to Phantom of the Opera. We went down to Detroit Opera House with my mom and we saw the play. All of us got dressed up in dresses and heels and sat through a great play. I loved going to the opera and I think everyone should go at least once. It is tons of fun going to the Detroit Opera House and seeing all the hand-
Old friends, new friends
I have some new friends and many old friends. Some of my new friends went to different schools and all of my old friends went to Holmes Middle School with me. A lot of my friends even went to Taylor Elementary School with me, such as, Emma Parker and Pat Lee.
Interesting New Words
My favorite new word is ethnocentric, meaning thinking ones culture is better or the only right culture. This is my new favorite word because it is fun to say. There are fun words every week, but the definitions are sometimes hard to remember. I always mix up words and definitions.
Popular, memorable songs
Some popular songs right now are “Down” by Jay Sean and “Toes” by Zac Brown Band. These songs are popular on radio right now. I don’t think they will be memorable, but for right now they are great to listen to. My favorite song right now is “Cowboy Casanova” by Carrie Underwood.
Popular, memorable movies
In the movie theater right now some popular movies are Where the Wild Things Are and Paranormal Activity. A popular and memorable movie right now is This is it. It’s a movie about Michael Jackson’s last performance before he died. I know people will be watching this movie for years and years to remember how great Michael Jackson was.
Top five Current Events
5. President Obama won Nobel Piece Prize
4. H1N1 vaccines are out
3. Run- off elections in Afghanistan against Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah taking place November 7, 2009
2. Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees are going to the World Series
1. The 2010 Olympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro
Fads and Trends
Trends going around Stevenson High School right now is wearing plaid, and wearing a lot of friendship bracelets. Ugg boots and slippers are very popular in my school also. People in my school are all different, so there are no real trends. A huge trend going around the nation right now is New Moon.
Weirdest, scariest, funniest moments
My funniest moments of high school always happen at cheer. My cheer team always has so many exciting and hilarious times together. Not many weird or scary things have happened to me. I try to avoid them.
Homecoming
During the week of Homecoming it is spirit week. This year in 2009 the themes were country club Monday, tie-dye Tuesday, Wild West Wednesday, senior citizen Thursday and super spunky Spartan day is Friday. On Friday, we have a pep assembly in 6th hour. I am cheering at it, so I get to leave in 5th hour. Saturday is the big day, Homecoming. This week is overall the best week of the year and it all leads up to an amazing night. Friday and Saturday are party days and it will not be boring.
Advice for freshman
Never mess with the upperclassmen! They don’t care if they get in trouble and you should. Always do homework. It’s harder to bring up a grade then anything. Don’t rush to class, take your time. Most of the time you won’t be late to class. By the two minute bell get moving. When the bell rings start walking to your class. Unless it’s on the total opposite side of the school then you shouldn’t run. Activates in school make the year go by so much faster. Join a sport or a club instead of sitting around your house with nothing to do, and you will make friends so you really can’t go wrong. There are so many after school activates to join its hard not to be a part of it. The last thing is don’t be shy. No one really cares if you make a fool of yourself, so just be yourself. Having fun is a major part of getting through the day or you’re going to hate school.
Looking forward
I’m looking forward to the rest of the school year. I can’t wait to do more activates and meet new people. I’m going to make the rest of high school the best I possibly can. I really hope I make cheer all four years of high school. One year I am hoping I can make a float. It seems so much fun and I want to be a part of it.
Other noteworthy achievements or events
Stevenson beat Churchill High School at homecoming. A very noteworthy event is Halloween in Saturday and Haunted High Night on Wednesday. A noteworthy achievement is that I received 46 out of 44 on my math test. I was very happy. October is a great month!
